Here is the second part of the Leftfield Heavy Electronic Disco, made up of recently produced music from artists such as Soft Rocks, Prins Thomas, Todd Terje, Andrew Yukon, Kid Who, Cut Copy. I thought I’d try mixcloud out, it does not have a download option on Mixcloud, so you can download the mix here http://www.mediafire.com/?4uw9wtbm935t7lf . This one is for those who have a slightly more skewed mind when it comes to music.
The Time Concept
With 2011 behind us, and we are pushing through January at speed heading towards spring, we are well passed the stage of doing a roundup of the best music of 2011, if it is good music it will carry its weight beyond the boundaries of time anyway. It is interesting how we sometimes perceive music in a linear of time and encase it with self-imposed restrictions, the track you bought in 2009 you won’t play in 2012 because you have labelled it “old”, but you hear a track you have never heard and unknowingly from 1979 or 1992 it is consider new, at least to your virgin ears. Sometimes it is difficult to change our perceptions and attitude towards music and time, music trends come and go from decade to decade, and go from sounding fresh to dated from dated to fresh. But this is if you opt to follow trends, which is in itself another way of herding music into a pen that can be opened to let an era of music unleashed on a new generation, or quickly closed to progress to the next sound. I try and make an effort in changing my attitude towards timeframes and music, much like the way I may look at a painting or read a piece of literature, where figment of time holds no boundary. If you have taken the time to read this, then I applaud your stamina, enough waffle, now for some music.

Cut Copy – Sun God (Andrew Weatherall Mix)
I have been waiting for eons for this to c0me out, and was unsure if it would even see the light of day. Originally I first heard this on a Weatherall 6mix show months back, and now in your Xmas stocking the kind folks from Modular People have put this incredible remix of Sun God from Cut Copy’s amazing Zonoscope album as a freebie on soundcloud ahead of the release of the singles 12″ in the New Year.

Gordon Kaye – Special K Mixes
A few weeks ago during a little bit of digging about in the virtual hemisphere I unearthed a mix series by Gordon Kaye on MixCloud. In the early 90′s Gordon made a number of mixtapes that were available through outlets such as SIGN OF THE TIMES (London), ROCKIT (Brighton) and THE DEPOT (BIRMINGHAM). Myself being relatively new to Brighton area has discovered that Gordon played quite a role in the early acid house scene on the south coast, and went on to be a partner in Joy for life records that had a shop in Brighton and later a shop in Nottingham, have a read about the man behind the following mixes here. Gordon has kindly provided links to his special K series, that are digitised versions of the original recordings from back way when. And if you are heading to The Open House in Brighton on NYE, I think you will be in for a treat, as Gordon will be playing a rather special vintage house set.

Trevor Jackson – Out of the oridinary, Berlin
Was just listening to Trevor Jackson awesome live set from Out of the ordinary / Tape club, Berlin from earlier this year. Starts of pitched down playing some afro balearic tracks before moving into more techier electronic territorry with nods to DAF (Robert Gorl) at the mid way point, then progressing into more obscurities plus a bit of Pleasure Dome (Frankie Goes to Hollywood) that has been having a bit of a revival recently, enjoy the ride.

Retrospective – The Early Progressive Years
It has been a long time since I have posted anything relating to the early progressive house tracks that emerged in 1991 and continued onwards, championed by some bloke up North called Sasha, and quite a few people in the South in that big over sprawling mess called London. A decent chap called Colin Gee has put together a three retrospective mixes of the big and not so big prog hitters that were being played in these early days, when producers who wore motorcycle boots and grew their hair long, made drum beats by stretching the skin of roadkill over a used baked bean tin, while blowing an abandoned trumpet, standing one footed top of a hill, recording it all in their portable DAT recorder, the results where a lot better than you’ll have imagined.

Anthology of American Acid House
I had a lovely email from Harry Bennet who shared with me his “Anthology of American Acid House”. Continuing the creative curatorial spirit of Harry Smith’s 1952 Anthology of American Folk Music, this anthology presents the legacy of American acid house in three themed mixes curated and performed by CCC DJ Harry Bennett. Each mix contributes to the recognition of this musical subgenre, originating in late 1980s Chicago, as itself a rich strain of folk music.
Throbbing Gristle – Hot on the heels of love (Eskimo Twins Remix)
I am somewhat a late discoverer of Throbbing Gristle, many years ago I had heard some of their previous works, but maybe not the sounds that warmed to my ears, or my hearing had not matured enough at that stage. More recently I discovered their album 20 Jazz Funk Greats, and on that album was the track that really caught my attention, namely the primitive techno track called Hot on the heals of love. This is where the power of the internet really has come into play over the years, where we can discover these artists who may have become completly forgotten to many, or remained unheard of to a new generation. There is so much interest now in these early sounds, that Throbbing Gristle have scheduled represses of their albums, and 20 Jazz Funk Greats recently hit the shops, and that is where I am heading now to pick up my copy.
Here is the Eskimo Twins rework of Hot on the heels of Love, you can check the original here of their 1979 album 20 Jazz Funk Greats

Andrew Weatherall – Disco Deviant, Brighton, 28.10.2011
Last month Andrew Weatherall visit our Seaside town and played quite possibly the best set I have heard this year in Brighton. Pablo Contraband played the first set, and by the time I walked into the club around midnight the place was filling up and the darker side of Pablo was being played loud to an appreciative crowd. I was at the bar ordering a drink when boom, I noticed a shift in the music, and the air in the room was replaced by a sonic tidal wave as Weatherall’s first track came on. From there on in, the whole club was immersed in the sounds that were being played, plenty of gated synths, hypnotic rhythms, heavy electronic shoegaze, with the tempo never reaching above 120bpm but packing this immense energy. Weatherall still remains at the top of his game, without compromise, inspiring and staying true to his unique sound, we are all already looking forward to his next trip to the seaside for fish n chips and a stick of rock.
