This was one of those tracks that everyone knew as “the siren track”, I loved this track..viva 1992.

Deep Beats Vol 1

A few years back I posted “So Special” by Two Men from Jersey on Bass boy Records in 1991. A couple of other house gems from these men from across the pond came before and after that release. One of my favourites is “Do it in the dark”, a B-Side track from 1989, it sounds almost like Kenny Jammin Jason’s Can U Dance in a curve ball kind of way. The main track on the a-side is called Track Werks which is a mash up of samples from Kraftwerk and Eddy Grant’s Time warp. If anyone has a copy of Tribal Spirits I would love to hear it, it is the only release of Two Men from Jersey I did not pick up.

Love Committees “Just as Long as I’ve got you” was given the Lenny Dee and Frankie Bones treatment in the late 80′s. The Belgian release by New beat project “101″ had a nice alternative B-Side called “I Got Rock n Roll”.

Some more B-side business from a little known artist on Quark records produced by Eric Krupper. Not to be confused with the mid 90s La Luna who done the Ethics Ep (Bang to the beat of the drum etc), this track was put out on Quark in 1990, and boasts a lovely deep latin house track. The B-Side is the one I have always opted for, a dubbed out version with subtle acid grooves bubbling through the track, I have not seen this version on youtube, and I have kept this one to myself for far too long, so I am sharing the love with you, enjoy.

OK I am going to go out on a limb here and confess to liking this slab of Italian caciotta, mind you only the Massive remix version. I think the italo piano sounds was a love hate affair with some people, it was rarely played on the traveller sound systems , although Axe Corner’s Tortuga would get a regular hammering on the Sweat rig during 1991. It is a sound that has not dated too well, unlike deep Chicago & NY house that seems to stand up to the test of time quite well. The lyrics in this track were quite daft, like most Italian house tracks, but there was something very hypnotic in this remix that would suck me in. I always fancied an instrumental version of this, maybe one for the chopping board for a future DJ cut, or maybe not.

With 2011 behind us, and we are pushing through January at speed heading towards spring, we are well passed the stage of doing a roundup of the best music of 2011, if it is good music it will carry its weight beyond the boundaries of time anyway. It is interesting how we sometimes perceive music in a linear of time and encase it with self-imposed restrictions, the track you bought in 2009 you won’t play in 2012 because you have labelled it “old”, but you hear a track you have never heard and unknowingly from 1979 or 1992 it is consider new, at least to your virgin ears. Sometimes it is difficult to change our perceptions and attitude towards music and time, music trends come and go from decade to decade, and go from sounding fresh to dated from dated to fresh. But this is if you opt to follow trends, which is in itself another way of herding music into a pen that can be opened to let an era of music unleashed on a new generation, or quickly closed to progress to the next sound. I try and make an effort in changing my attitude towards timeframes and music, much like the way I may look at a painting or read a piece of literature, where figment of time holds no boundary.  If you have taken the time to read this, then I applaud your stamina, enough waffle, now for some music.

I have been waiting for eons for this to c0me out, and was unsure if it would even see the light of day. Originally I first heard this on a Weatherall 6mix show months back, and now in your Xmas stocking the kind folks from Modular People have put this incredible remix of Sun God from Cut Copy’s amazing  Zonoscope album as a freebie on soundcloud ahead of the release of the singles 12″ in the New Year.

A few weeks ago during a little bit of digging about in the virtual hemisphere I unearthed a mix series by Gordon Kaye on MixCloud. In the early 90′s Gordon made a number of mixtapes that were available through outlets such as SIGN OF THE TIMES (London), ROCKIT (Brighton) and THE DEPOT (BIRMINGHAM). Myself being relatively new to Brighton area has discovered that Gordon played quite a role in the early acid house scene on the south coast, and went on to be a partner in Joy for life records that had a shop in Brighton and later a shop in Nottingham, have a read about the man behind the following mixes here. Gordon has kindly provided links to his special K series, that are digitised versions of the original recordings from back way when. And if you are heading to The Open House in Brighton on NYE, I think you will be in for a treat, as Gordon will be playing a rather special vintage house set.
